KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — The Member of Parliament for Kapar, S. Manikavasagam, today lodged a police report against Selangor police chief, Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar who claimed that two deputy ministers and the family of car theft suspect, A.Kugan, had barged into the Serdang Hospital mortuary on Jan 20.
Manikavasagam and lawyer N.Surendran lodged the report at the Brickfields District Police Headquarters at 12.10 pm.
“We not only lodged a police report, we also handed over a CD recording to the police to prove that the allegation that the two deputy ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department, Senator T. Murugiah and Datuk S.K. Devamany, and the victim’s family had barged into the hospital mortuary was totally incorrect,” he said.
Manikavasam said the CD recording clearly showed that the two deputy ministers concerned were not at the scene when the people entered the mortuary, and were only present several hours later.
“The police allegation that the victim’s family had trespassed into the mortuary was also not true because the recording showed that the staff at the mortuary had allowed all family members of the victim to come into the room,” he said.
Manikavasagam said that as such, action should be taken against the Selangor Police Chief for making a false statement.
Kugan, 23, who had been detained on suspicion of being involved in the theft of luxury cars in Sungai Chua, Kajang, was found dead while in custody at the lock-up of the Subang USJ Police Station.
Brickfields OCPD, ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Talib, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed receiving the report at 2.20 pm.
Khalid, when contacted by Bernama, declined to comment on the police report lodged against him. — Bernama

Syed Hamid: Don't regard criminals as heroes
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 28 — The people should not regard criminals as heroes and the police who enforce the law as demons, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said today.
Speaking in general terms, he said no one was above the law and added that action would be taken against those who broke the law, even if it was the police.
“We will not conceal the facts,” he told reporters at his office here.
Syed Hamid said he was not linking his statement, made in general terms, with the death of car theft suspect A. Kugan who had died while in police custody at the Taipan police station in Subang Jaya on Jan 20.
“I am not pinpointing anybody,” the minister stressed.
He explained that police had detained three suspects including Kugan following investigations into 19 cases of vehicle theft and armed robbery.
The minister also asked the people not to politicise the investigation into Kugan’s death, saying it would make the police task more difficult.
“They must talk of the case based on facts and not assumptions,” he said.
Kugan, 22, who was detained on Jan 15 at the Taipan police station on suspicion of being involved in the theft of luxury cars in Sungai Chua, Kajang, had died while being questioned.
Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar had said a post-mortem found that Kugan had died due to fluid in his lungs but Kugan’s family sought a second post mortem, insisting that Kugan had died of injuries.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said later that Kugan’s death had been classified as murder. A second post-mortem on Kugan has been done since.
The police are investigating Kugan’s death and the results are expected to be known soon.

Rais: Nasaruddin should quit
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 28 — The Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) should organise a mass movement to demand that Bota assemblyman Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim gives up the seat to enable a by-election as he has chosen to cross over to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), said Umno Supreme Council (MT) member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
Rais, who is also Foreign Minister, said Nasaruddin won the seat on the BN ticket in the general election and by deserting the coalition, he had betrayed the trust the people had placed in him.
“If I were a Perakian, I would start mobilising all the NGOs (non-governmental organisations) and village chiefs now to demand his resignation. The Perak BN should take this step.
“We (Umno) have thousands of branches in Perak. Umno branches, the Putera, Puteri, Youth and Wanita wings all must speak up. Just voicing in the media is not good enough,” he told reporters after handing the letter of appointment to Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Datuk Othman Hashim, at his ministry here today.
He added that he was confident the BN would not have any problem winning the seat if a by-election was held.
On Sunday, Nasaruddin, who won the seat by a majority of 2,068 votes against PKR’s Usaili Alias in the general election held last March, declared that he was quitting Umno to join PKR.
Following his move, the Pakatan Rakyat government of PAS, DAP and PKR in the state increased its seats to 31 in the State Assembly while the BN’s was reduced to 28.
On the call by Umno’s disciplinary board chairman Tan Sri Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail for the wings in the party to be abolished to check money politics, Dr Rais said each suggestion to improve Umno now would be given its due consideration.
“If the majority feel it would be good for Umno, the MT will definitely take it further,” he said. — Bernama

Selangor police chief: Don’t turn Kugan funeral into a political protest
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — The Selangor police have warned those attending the funeral of A. Kugan, who died whilst in police custody, not to participate in any illegal gathering or carry banners and posters.
The funeral is scheduled on Wednesday.
Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the funeral should not be politicised or turned into an illegal demonstration as it would disrupt public order and lead to chaos.
He believed that plans were underway by certain groups to turn the occasion into an illegal gathering to protest against alleged police brutally.
Khalid said the police learnt the funeral procession would be organised in such a manner that it would involve certain parts of the city before arriving at an undisclosed burial ground in Selangor.
"Cards and banners are also expected to be carried by members of the procession," he said in a statement here today.
The police chief advised the public not participate in the illegal gathering as the force was not against a normal funeral procession and respected the grieving family. — Bernama

Perak Umno to meet Najib to discuss defection
IPOH, Jan 26 – The Perak Umno Liaison Committee will meet party deputy president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur on Monday evening to discuss Bota Assemblyman Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim’s defection to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
Its chairman Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali said Najib was expected to issue a statement after the meeting.
“I am also asking Datuk Nasarudin to meet the Umno president (Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) as there is nothing that cannot be resolved. If he is free, he can also meet Najib tomorrow,” he told reporters yesterday after chairing an emergency meeting of Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen, here.
Tajol Rosli also hoped that Nasarudin would “think deeply” about his action and return to Umno.
Tajol Rosli also dismissed rumours that a number of BN assemblymen would be joining Pakatan Rakyat, saying such talk was mere speculation.
Asked whether Nasarudin had before this voiced out any problems to him, he said the assemblyman had never done so.
“Perhaps problems could have cropped up since the divisional elections last October when Nasaruddin contested the Bota Umno division chief post against the incumbent Datuk Mohd Zaim Abu Hassan and lost,” he said.
Tajol Rosli also said that Nasaruddin had not contacted him so far and his phone calls to him (Nasarudin) had gone unanswered, although some Umno members were in contact with him.
“Perhaps he feels embarrassed to speak to me after what happened, but I hope he will reconsider the decision (of joining Pakatan Rakyat) he made,” he added.
Twenty of the 28 Barisan Perak assemblymen attended the emergency meeting which ended at 11pm. The rest – other than Nasaruddin – were out of the state at the time. – Bernama
